Great Music To Soothe Your Soul....CD Recording Not The Best .......2006-06-14

The selection of these 10 instrumental tracks are a wonderful mix of mostly ballads, with a few upbeat tunes, of the unmistakable styling of Miles Davis. This is one of those albums, I like to have in my car when I am stuck in rush hour traffic(which is just about every hour in So. Cal.). I like to roll up the windows, and just let Davis take me away for about 45 minutes.

The songs range from romantic,to soul soothing,to jazzy foot tapping, finger snapping numbers. The music,and all the instruments are outstanding. 10 tracks in all,including "How Deep Is the Ocean", "Autumn Leaves"(where you can linger with Davis for 11 full minutes!) and "Venus De Milo"(see buying info for complete list).

The music, and selections are 5 stars, but the Madacy recording of this legendary great is less then great(hence, my 3 star rating).The tracks seem to be recorded at different levels. There are times I have to turn the volume up and down, and sometimes there is a hissing noise in the background.I don't think it is the age of the recording, as I have some great stuff recorded even earlier. Also it would have been nice to have some notes included as to the musicians. But I do love the music.

Recommended for the fan who can't get enough and for long rides. If you have to be stuck in traffic, let Miles Davis soothe your soul....Laurie

Ballads with Bop Too.......2001-01-01

This collection of earlier works, some from the Blue Note catalog, feature a mix of the trumpeter playing straight ballads with several bop classics like "Venus De Milo", "Israel", and "Rouge". This CD is a good introduction to Miles Davis showing his more melodic side and his inimitable bebop stylings. This is a good CD to play while dining with friends who are not screaming, hair on fire, jazz fans. Miles is an icon, a classic, and a giant in jazz. For its price, this CD is excellent for the new jazz enthusiast as well as one who is no stranger to the scene. Try this laid back Miles featuring an outstanding collection of sidemen and rhythm sections.
