Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Duke would be proud.......2003-08-07

This song is a nice balance of well-known Duke tunes and more obscure classics. The musicianship on this album is unbelievable.
Each track really swings and the Hounds make all these covers their own.
This is possibly the last album ever by the Yalloppin Hounds and they leave like they came in---WITH A BANG!

This reviewer's personal favorites are Antidisestablishmentarianismist, (which most die-hard Hounds fans will remember as one of the first tunes they performed in their early days), Almighty God has those Angels, and I'm Beginning to See (the Light).

Peter Hartmann's crooning velvety voice sounds heavely on Spankin Brand New Doll and Don't you know I Care.

GClef's fun-loving rendition of Me and You is another highlight of this album.

I'm beginning to See (The Light) is a dark meloncholic track that will send shivers up and down your spine and a refreshing change from the other cookie cutter swing band covers of the same title we've been subjected to for the past few years.

The musicianship as usual is outstanding with most of the personnel from Lindy Hop Deluxe returning.
Lord Sledge, and Mark McGowan return on trumpet.
J.Walter Hawkes (from Jet Set Six)makes a special appearance on trombone.
G-Clef and Julian Pressley are on saxes.
Clef is also a one man band himself taking turns on piano, organ, clarinet and percussion and vocals.
Melissa Kate Miller, Pete Hartmann and JakiNeko are featured vocalists. Hartmann is also the bassist. Joe Rybcsyck is a talented up-and-coming pianist who shares duty with Ensar Kabil on this album. Marlon Sobol returns on drums and percussion. Last but not least, Archangel Metatron adds to the mix with a rap on I'm Beginning to See.

Don't miss out--get this album!

5 out of 5 stars HOUNDS PLAY DUKE!!!.......2003-07-28

For those of us in New York, live swing bands are now a thing of the recent past. I remember dancing and listening to the Hounds each year on or around the Duke's bday, and this album does more than justice to the repertoire of the Ellington Canon as per the Yalloppin' Hounds from about 1998 until 2003. Many of us waiting for this one for quite some time, and I don't know why I waited before purchasing this one, but it was well worth the wait! This is indeed their most polished, and perhaps most swinging effort yet! Lord Sledge, ot Toasters' fame is back in the lead trumpter seat, and he is swinging ... as always. G-Clef is soaring on alto sax once again, and the vocals of Pete Hartmann and Melissa Kate Miller are certainly chamrming here. Gosh, to hear this band again live! Buy this album if you like Ellington or the Hounds, you won't be disappointed! It SWINGS!!!
