Essential Works from a Jazz Giant.......2006-02-25
Eric Dolphy's important spring 1963 studio recordings are available in numerous forms, but this Portuguese double-disc conveniently includes all nine tracks with a full personnel list and other helpful information. Dolphy, accompanied by such like-minded spirits as trumpeter Woody Shaw, vibist Bobby Hutcherson, bassist Richard Davis and fellow reedsmen Prince Lasha and Sonny Simmons, offers a rich and varied group of performances here, including an unaccompanied alto saxophone solo on "Love Me," several haunting duets with Davis and rambunctious full-band assaults on the Dolphy originals "Iron Man," "Burning Spear" and "Mandrake." "Music Matador," a calypso-tinged number by Lasha and Simmons, and Fats Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz" are also standouts.
Aside from being Dolphy's only studio sessions under his own name from the last full year of his life, these recordings form an important link between his earlier, more "mainstream" work and the increasingly avant garde avenues he would explore in his final months, most famously on 1964's OUT TO LUNCH. The varied arrangements, strong cast of players and excellent selection of original and covered material make these nine performances an essential part of any modern jazz fan's collection, and ERIC DOLPHY SOUND is, to my knowledge, the easiest way to grab hold of them.
Doubly Fantastic.......2003-04-29
2 cd`s, for the price of 1....that is the LEAST of your concern for this release is simply gold...great renditions with deep playing, very good assortment of tunes, this is a Dolphy must-have.
a terrific deal!.......2000-02-12
First thing I have to say about this album-- get the IMPORTversion! Check amazon's page for the regularversion for a track list and samples.
Next, I have to say that the material on this album, most of it recorded in 1963, is absolutely great for anyone who liked Out To Lunch. It's a DOUBLE CD set, with several tracks featuring Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, so you can get a look at Bobby and Eric developing their rapport for the subsequent Out To Lunch. But there's much more than just great vibe work. The real highlights for me are Eric's duets with Richard Davis on bass. "Come Sunday" and "Alone Together" feature Eric on bass clarinet, while "Ode to Charlie Parker" has him on flute. Listening to Richard Davis' arco bass on "Come Sunday" is the best I've heard in jazz, hands down. And compare "Ode" with the version Eric recorded on Far Cry. What a difference!
Also featured on this album are 2 so-called unreleased bonus tracks. One, "Wherever I Go", is actually from Eric's days with Chico Hamilton. "Stormy Weather" is with Eric Mingus. even though they're not truly unreleasaed, they're still worth a listen.
I also loved Eric's solo alto sax version of "Love Me". Check it out! Okay, if you are considering buying Iron Man, Music Matador, or Conversations albums, GET THIS instead (Dolphy Sound IMPORT).
