Customer Reviews:
Fine Sutton Duets.......2001-03-31
Ralph Sutton is the last great stride piano player. This CD of duets with Japanese trumpeter Yoshio Toyama in 1987 - 1990 finds him close to the top of his form and, for once, playing a well tuned piano in excellent studio surroundings.
Sutton dominates procedings, and generates tremendous momentum on "There'll Be Some Changes Made", "Dinah" and, in particular, "Indiana". Toyama is a good foil to Sutton, although unfortunately, he insists on singing on a couple of numbers. Sutton plays a characteristicaly dynamic solo performance of "Shine".
All lovers of stride piano should get this album. It is one of Sutton's best from the 1980s - 1990s.
