Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A comment on "Comment".......2005-01-13

I found Les McCann's "Comment" to be a rather weak release from the very talented pianist.

"Comment" is decent soul jazz and it features a lot of singing on the tracks. However, this one plays out more like a bad R&B album, rather than a jazz album.

Also, it's a little too slow for my taste. So if you're looking for something along the lines of his fantastic "Swiss Movement" album and other hard-driving soul-jazz, this isn't it.

"Comment" has not aged nicely over the years.

5 out of 5 stars Soulful jazz with strings!.......2003-04-28

Since I bought this album on vinyl 12 years ago, I've had to find all of Les McCann's recordings. This is the one that sticks with me, that I love all the cuts on, that comforts, delights and amuses/amazes me. The jazz piano master is singing here and singing like a man IN LOVE! Roberta Flack joins him on two songs-I think these were her first recordings. There are exquisite strings arranged and conducted by William Fischer and the song selections are wonderful. I was delighted that Collectibles issued this. I played it almost continuously after the events of 9/11 and found it emotional, embracing, soothing, comforting. I love this cd!

5 out of 5 stars Old School Soul.......2001-08-08

We should thank Joel Dorn for uncovering this gem of theme music from the Black Power and Civil Rights Movement's glory days. Roberta Flack and her crystal pure voice had recently been "discovered" doing gigs in DC and Les McCann was the High Priest of the soul jazz movement. Here he sings and plays. The late, great Donny Hathaway was soon to folow with efforts with Roberta. The music sparkles with the message and fervor of the times and sounds as fresh and contemporary today as it did then.Today's politics and music pales in comparison but this piece of music lives on as an inspiration!
