Customer Reviews:
Magnificent Horn!.......2007-02-09
Pee Wee Irwin was one of the New York driving forces in Dixieland in the l950's-60's, who was so accomplished on his instrument that he played for the New York Philamonic as well as at Nick's in Greenwich Village. Possessing a clean, powerful tone, he frequently led groups, as when I met and heard him in Chicago in 1957, which contained Tony Sparbaro (Spargo), the drummer of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. Most of his recordings are still on LP, but this CD contains some of the trad jazz chestnuts of the O.D.J.B., such as "Clarinet Marmalade". He was highly respected in the jazz circles, familiar with Eddie Condon's and Nick's, and this is a good collection of his artistry!
