Originally released on three lp's, Jazz On A Saturday Afternoon has been available on two cd's for some time and documents Davison at his best with a great band from Atlanta that included cornetist Ernie Carson and clarinet player Herman Foretich. The musicians were up for the occasion and sound inspired. All the old songs are played with a warmth and drive associated with the finest Condon units. It's most interesting hearing Ernie Carson play his cornet alongside Wild Bill. If you are familiar with these guys, it'll bring a smile to your face.

Jazzology has championed Wild Bill Davison since 1949. He was on their first record and he's been a primary part of their catalogue for years after. Many of the sessions were with pick up bands such as this one. Sometimes Wild Bill's presence was enough to raise the musical standard. Sometimes it wasn't. Happily, both volumes of Jazz On A Saturday Afternoon are examples of Bill acting as the catalyst.

Although it's music from a bye-gone era, the performance and sound are excellent. If swinging Chicago style jazz with hot solos is your cup of tea, don't hesitate to buy both volumes.
