Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Whee!.......2000-04-27

This is an excellent album, and Turk Murphy and his Jazz band are (of course) fantastic, as usual! The brass soars and wails, and the piano playing is immaculate! Take a listen to "Darktown Strutters' Ball" and "Pastime Rag #4." The former sweeps you out of your seat (and the melody is one of my favorites in the 1910s slew of raggy songs), and the latter is swingy yet subdued. Open the windows and let the summer breezes rustle the curtains! My only gripes are that the recording gets a little scratchy at times in the first track, and that there's no female singer. I really would have enjoyed a wailer in the tradition of Marion Harris, Sophie Tucker, or Bessie Smith, or even a Helen Kane or Ada Jones. The male vocals (most of the band get's a chance to stretch their vocal chords) are indeed good, however; you can really tell they're having fun, and they play off each other with that band telepathy and joie de vivre that they possess in abundance.
