Customer Reviews:
Excellent CD.......2002-12-29
I first heard this CD in 1998 when it was given to me as a gift. I've just about worn it out listening to it. Someone must have thought I needed another copy. I received two for xmas this year. I'm gonna keep one for myself and share the other.
What I especially liked about this CD is track #9 Geckos in Bahia. It is worth listening to. Don't just take my word for it.
Closer to new age musique than ethnic jazz........2002-01-08
In part, reminds me of the thrilling persussive "Apocolypse Now Sessions"... but... with a somewhat weak link, Wolfgang Puschnig. (the sax and flute player) He sounds a lot like Jan Gabarek without any shading, timbre, "outness" etc.
Hence, this cd falls closer to a pleasant new age sound as opposed to ethnic jazz despite the gallant efforts of Zakir, Airto, et al.
This album has it all.......2000-10-23
The all-world percussion ensemble (featuring Glen Velez, Zakir Hussain and Airto Moreira) weaves together diverse traditional approaches to rhythm to create an album that surpasses Mickey Hart's Planet Drum. It's that good. Intricate rhythms, atmospheric coloring and a seemingly infinite palette of timbres draw the listener into a hypnotic realm of beat and interval. Flute and sax melody lines on several songs turn the album into an infectious and soulful 45-minute suite.
this CD is not what it is marketed as.......2000-10-16
The title to this CD, "Megadrums," is certainly misleading. It would lead one to expect (especially with the heavy-hitter percussionists on the album) a drummer tour-de-force, with an emphasis on chops. The reality of the CD, though, is on atmospheres and a ritual vibe, w/ forays into jazzy territory. The percussion is (of course) excellent, but more to the back. The sax/flutist gets more emphasis than anyone else and, while a reasonable player (though too much like Jan Garbrek for my tastes), this is not what one would expect from the way the CD is marketed and titled. Most effective are the cuts like Track #9, which call to mind a Santaria ceremony with minimal studio polish.
