Great compilation of hot '20s bands.......2005-11-29

I bought this CD a few weeks ago specifically for the two Paul Tremaine recordings. I just can't get enough of his band's "Aristocratic Stomp" with the hot *harp* solo (you have to hear it to believe it!). However, I was pleasantly surprised with the other selections on this disc as well. I'm a fan and collector of 1920s jazz and dance bands, but I wasn't expecting much from such names as Kay Kyser or the lesser-known bandleaders on this disc. Let me just say that you wouldn't recognize Kay Kyser from his recordings on this CD! All of the bands play with plenty of pep and the compilation presents a nice sampling. If you like 1920s jazz and dance bands, I'm sure you'll enjoy this. Yes, it's a CD-R, but it does come with a nicely annotated booklet by Warren Vachý, Sr., and the sound quality is excellent. Highly recommended!

Great dance music from the twenties.......2005-06-16

I love this stuff! Before the crash of 1929 put 90% of the musicians in this country out of business (100 million records were sold in 1927; it was down to 6 million by 1932), American pop/jazz was the peppiest, most inventive, happiest music on the planet. The whole country was giddy with easy money, fast cars, exciting new inventions, and syncopated music. This is another great issue from the Old Masters company. This company is doing us all a great service by remastering and releasing these. Be sure to grab this before it goes out of print!

All Dance Band Music Was Regional.......2003-12-12

While the late 20's and early 30's yielded some national orchestal artists like Paul Whiteman, Coon-Sanders Nighthawks, Isham Jones and Casa Loma, much of the dance band scene was a regional affair on radio and on records. This album is a nice document of some of these territory bands. Most notable by virtue of later success is Kay Kyser (listen to a very young Sully Mason on vocals). This was produced by TOM on CD-R instead of a commercially pressed CD.
