. . . or maybe not. Too much chutzpah for that purveyor of piano trio delicacies? Perhaps. In any case, get him on a major label.

This guy, with his estimable bandmates, Euro-hero Jean-Jacques Avenel on bass, and longtime Steve Lacy drummer, John Betsch, has produced one of the most captivating piano trio sessions I've ever heard. Where's he been hiding?

With chops out the wazoo, uncanny rhythmic sophistication and propulsion, deft melodic invention, immediately accessible yet admirably stylish compositions, and the ability to get high-powered and idiosyncratic players entirely on the same page, Gajo has achieved the rare triple crown as performer, composer, and leader. Whether casually blasting out at breakneck speed, "Test," or assaying ur-balladic territory of a somewhat exotic nature, "Blue Sand," celebrating the Tuareg people on a beach in Senegal, or investigating the tragedy of "Rwanda," featuring some impossibly poignant bass from Avenel and a solo of great feeling and heart from the leader, or re-invigorating an Abdullah Ibrahim line, "Mountain of the Night," or spinning out a tune that manages to be both Latin and Oriental at the same time, "The Window," Gajo imbues everything he touches with poignancy and significance.

If you're looking for something out of the ordinary from a piano trio rather than the same-old same-old, look no further. This is jazz of the absolute highest accomplishment, brimming with excitement and originality. Absolutely not to be missed.
