Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Jazz Violin will never be the same again.......2004-04-24

The last reviewer indicated that Joe Kennedy "ought to be famous." Obviously she did not realize that Joe Kennedy "was" famous and he played all over the world. I am sad to report that he passed away on April 17, 2004 at the age of 80. As a student of Joe Kennedy's, jazz violin will never be heard the same way again. May his soul rest in peace.

5 out of 5 stars I knew Joe Kennedy and this album........2003-05-14

I remember the first time that I heard this album and was mesmerized by the fact that strings could really swing, and that I knew the man who wrote the music. As a student at Virgina Union University in Richmond, VA, I was a member of the marching band that Joe Kennedy conducted. He was also head of the music department at Maggie Walker High School. We (my clamorous band members and I) really didn't know how great a musician this patient and soft-spoken gentleman was until we heard "Strings by Candlelight." It sounded like a hundred strings with one soul (Mantovani never sounded this good.)! This album was way ahead of its time and is a "must" item for every serious music collector (jazz, pop, classical or otherwise). Joe plays the violin with real taste and feeling and his technique is flawless. His arrangements on this album should be mandatory lessons in conservatories. (I'm still trying to figure out his innovative voicings.) You'd think that he used the entire string section from the New York Philharmonic. (Actually, only a few strings were used.) Also, check out his phrasing and you'll hear how this album influenced a whole generation violinists. And to think that I let my autographed LP get away from me! Joe, thanks for the memories, and please feel free to contact me. I'm the guy who played sax and oboe, and due to your influences I appreciate good music - this album is a great example! The album deserves 6 stars! Buy it while it's still available.

5 out of 5 stars Strings By Candlelight.......2000-05-29

I aquired the LP about 30 years ago and have always loved it. I always wanted more from this performer/arranger-composer so was delighted to find this CD. It is a re-make, and wow--the sounds I'm hearing now on CD that were not audible on the LP! Although, all the tunes are old ones, the orchestra and soloist sound so fresh and current. The entire CD makes for a truly wonderful listening experience. For those interested in arranging and improvisation, it is also intriguing. Joe Kennedy expertly displays his talents in both areas on this recording.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......1999-11-20

My daughter and I had season tickets to the Augusta Synphony. She was ten. Music appreciation, etc. Boy were we surprised. She normally seemed bored at these concerts, but when Joe Kennedy, Jr. started playing we both knew this was different. I've NEVER heard anything like it. I'd never heard of jazz violin before. You just have to hear this. He's a music professor from Virginia - he ought to be famous. If you like violins, and if you like jazz, then you'll love this. Buy it..
