Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wycliffe Gordon preaches it!!.......2000-11-28

To listen to "The Gospel Truth" and sit still is next to impossible. The Wynton Marsalis trombone player Gordon makes these old time gospel shouters come alive again. The front line of Gordon (trom., Tuba), Marcus Printup (Trumpet), and Victor Goines (saxes)take on tunes like "Jesus Loves Me" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and give them a flavor of the black churches of the South. It's obvious that Eric Reed (piano) spent some time in these churches as well; his comping on "The Lord's Prayer" is a great example. Joshua Redman bassist Rueben Rogers provides great momentum throughout, and drummer Winard Harper adds a hint of New Orleans seasonings to the pot. The gospel tune "There's A Tree" showcases vocalist Carrie Smith with the band providing some great harmony behind her. She definitely has the Bessie Smith character to her voice, and shines on the cuts she is on. Wycliffe Gordon is spectacular on his originals like "The Deacon's Moan", "Hallelujah Scat", and the title track, and the tuba solo on "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" is worth the price of the cd alone. "The Gospel Truth" highlights the links between spirituals, blues, and jazz in a way that leves the listener wanting more.
