Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars benson's best blues.......2006-07-11

this is a hard to find benson album, that i picked up years ago as a collector piece, then i listened to it.GOOD STUFF, as is espically, "durham's turn", but all is well done and played. actually not too serious, alot of "fun" showing thru. benson's playing is great also!

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money.......2003-08-26

This is without a doubt the worst excuse for a record I have ever heard. Why this has ever been printed is a complete mystery to me. What I DO understand is why CTI immediately locked it away in some drawer in ý69 when it was recorded.
It almost sounds like an Aebersold record for rehearsing - there seems to be missing an instrument. Maybe it was just meant for checking the arrangements!?!!?
Itýs even harder to justify it, considering itýs release took place in ý82, long after super records like "Weekend in LA" and "Breeziný".
Donýt get me wrong - George Benson is a great hero of mine, and I love his playing, but I think this is a complete waste of money so be warned. Iýll give it one star however, because of the beautiful song "Out of the Blue", which by the way can be found on a great compilation CD by Verve.
So all in all : Whichever period of George Bensons history you like: STAY AWAY from this one!

4 out of 5 stars Golden Benson.......2001-06-12

This is classic George. The guitar is as smooth as his voice, which he uses just enough as to showcase his singing talent but not enough to make the album as soppy as his late 70s and 80s efforts. This is an cool blue selection of tunes, which complement albums such as Breezin' and live at Carnegie Hall.

5 out of 5 stars Short but Sweet -- glad it's available again.......1999-07-31

I almost gave this album 4 stars because it's short, maybe less than 30 minutes. But what a treat that it finally came out. This one was recorded in 1969 as A&M SP 3025, CTI series. For some reason it was shelved until 1984, when it came out on vinyl in A&M's "Audio Master Plus Series." Most of those great A&M jazz albums have been out of print since that time. Some aren't even out as Japanese imports. This needs to change! My favorite tracks are "Durham's Turn" and "Goodbye Columbus," but Benson's guitar and vocals are in great form on the remaining tracks as well.
