Customer Reviews:
What Happened?.......2004-08-05
This guy used to be one of the greatest guitarists in jazz fusion and did wonderful work in the 70's with the Gil Evans Orchestra and put out a number of albums under his own name on the East Wind label which were also top notch(Eight Mile Road and Prism). This CD,however, sounds like an experiment gone terribly wrong, either that or Mr Kawasaki has sold out to make a few bucks from the club scene. While his guitar work is as flawless as ever he has backed himself with some of the cheesiest preprogrammed synth beats I have ever heard. The backing sounds like it came out of a cheap casio keyboard. Jazz guitar and watered down programmed hiphop beats do not mix well at all. If you are a lover of jazz or fusion stay away from this one. If you want to experience Ryo Kawasaki at his best get the above mentioned East Wind albums.
The BEST?.......2004-02-23
He dang well could be! When I first heard the song Sweet Life I said I've got to grab this CD. I have never been so excited to obtain a song in my life. The song is what smooth jazz is all about. The rest of the CD does not fail to impress either. You must have this in your collection. A dream CD!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best guitarist you never heard of!.......2002-01-31
Unbelievable. No Ryo Kawasaki reviews? For ANY of his releases? If you're a fan of jazz guitar, acid jazz, or contemporary jazz, please give Ryo Kawasaki a try.
Sweet Life has a great soulful vibe that doesn't stop. A fleet fingered guitarist with a style all his own and a deep sense of groove, Kawasaki gives us 10 songs with good variety. The 8 instrumental cuts demonstrate Kawasaki's world class guitar skills and the 2 vocals are simply beautiful. Ilana Iguana has a beautiful voice and sings like an angel on "Together" and "You're the One."
I'm not a big fan of musicians covering the songs of others, but Kawasaki gives a great acoustic guitar reading of Janet Jackson's "Again." "Chapel of Love" brings to mind a classic spaghetti western movie. My only wish for this cd would be for Kawasaki to employ more live musicians (and less programming) to really bring his compositions to life.
I definitely like this cd (and the musician) a lot. This cd has very similar musical stylings to Chris Standring's "Velvet" and "Hip Sway."
Also, for fusion lovers, check out Kawasaki's cd "Mirror of My Mind." Great support from Harvey Mason and Michael Brecker, and Kawasaki's version of "Trinkets & Things" is simply pure perfection.
