Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Only CD as a Leader.............2004-07-05

...Neil Swainson is best known for his musical association with George Shearing. Neil is a superior bassist with great tone, impressive technique and a talented composer as well. Five of the six selections on this cd were written by him, the sixth having been written by tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson.

The opener is a rather brooding but up-tempo thing which breaks out allowing ample solo space for everyone.

"Port Of Spain" is a beautiful Latin tinged selection on which Henderson lays out and Woody Shaw carries the strong melodic line. This was the last studio session for Shaw who one of the top great trumpeters of the '70s and '80s.

"Southern Exposure" displays Swinson as a soloist as well as the boldness of Henderson and inventiveness of Shaw on their solos.

Henderson , again, lays out on "On The Lam" which allows Shaw to stretch out on his solo.

"Don't Hurt Yourself" is a ballad and a feature for some beautiful sax work by Henderson. There's also some excellent piano by Gary Williamson. The opening notes by Henderson reminded me of Billy Strayhorn's "Blood Count" and also the ballad "Only The Lonely".

The closer is the up-tempo original by Joe Henderson.

This is a cd that will appeal to anyone who enjoys advanced quartet/quintet hard bop, or any fans of Swainson, Henderson or Shaw.

5 out of 5 stars Neil's only session as leader & Woody's last studio session........2002-10-10

This is Neil's only session as leader & Woody Shaw's last studio session, two years before his death, and also features the late Joe Henderson. Most of the tunes were penned by Swainson, and have engaging melodies. High-quality advanced hard-bop throughout. This is an under-rated, over-looked collector's item for fans of either one of those two great horn players. Neil modestly takes only a brief solo on the last number, which lets him display his facility on an uptempo groove.
