Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ella has never sounder better.......2003-12-31

This wonderful concert was recorded in June, 1972, just a few weeks after I saw Ella give one of the greatest concerts I have ever heard at Carnegie Hall. I came to the CDs with mush anticipation, also fear that she could not possible be as good as I remember her. Well, Ella is fantasic. Her interaction with the other famous musician is breathtaking. I have over 700 CDs and would rate this set in the top 10.

5 out of 5 stars My choice of the best ever jazz recording.......2003-11-15

Personally rate this as my choice of the best jazz that I've ever heard. Do happen to like traditional type jazz more than bebop ('Chinese' music according to Louis Armstrong).

In My Humble Opinion (IMHO), some of the Ella Fitzgerald tracks border on the sublime.

Also, IMHO, Roy Eldridge's trumpet playing is fantastic.

Wonder why we hear so much of Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Guilliespe, Wynton Marsalis and not enough of Roy Eldridge, who I consider to be one of the best horn players of all time?

3 out of 5 stars Good but Uneven music; Ditto for this reissue.......2002-01-18

This release is historically significant in that it began as a mail-order only multi-LP box set released by Norman Granz of a "Jazz at the Philharmonic" style concert. It inspired him to found Pablo Records and to sign Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, and other musicians featured herein. Granz then released an edited version of this concert, omitting a handful of performances, as a 3-LP set.

This 3-CD issue restores the tracks omitted from the 3-LP set. As it happens, the complete concert could have easily fit on 2 CD's, so this is not the most efficient issue. A quibble, to be sure -- but if you're looking at this issue, it's only because you're a collector and shelf space is likely at a premium.

This is to say: if you're not a collector, there are better CD's to seek out for Basie, Ella, and Oscar. (Ella sings the theme from "Sanford and Son" and Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?" for heaven's sake. Wouldn't you rather hear her sing the Harold Arlen songbook?)

I for one am not a big fan of the JATP formula -- solo after solo, mostly solid but only rarely inspired -- it's fairly tedious listening, in my opinion. So while I'm a fan of Harry Edison, Roy Eldridge, Al Grey, Lockjaw Davis, Stan Getz, et al., I don't think they're heard to best advantage here.

But... if you're a completist, you have to have this. The sound quality is above average. The Basie band of 1972 is under-rated -- a solid rhythm section driven by Harold Jones at the drums, Jimmy Forrest and Al Grey both back in the band.
