Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "double your listening pleasure...the kid from St. Louis".......2001-08-04

Good to see this collection of two albums being released ~ "Both Sides of the Coin", is inclusive of two previously released recordings ("Gozame! Pero Ya" & "The Shining Sea"), both receive high marks for quality and content.

Been a big fan ever sense Cal came to my high school in St. Louis, was introduced then as the hometown boy that made good, appearing with George Shearing, this was my first taste of "live jazz", and of all places at my high school auditorium...very stimulating.

Back to the double album, entire 2-CD-package is outstanding...disc one has Tjader's latin side in complete control, each arrangement takes your breath away, first rate performances by all...but my favorite is disc two, a big, big fan of Johnny Mandel, think he's one of the greats in the songwriting department...Scott Hamilton on tenor sax is a welcome addition to an already great set of musicians ~ Hank Jones (piano), Vince Lateano (drums) and Dean Reilly (bass)...two stand outs ~ "A TIME FOR LOVE" and "THE SHINING SEA", a warmth of inner-feeling pour from Scott Hamilton's sax, shades long-a-go come to mind...as you drift back with memories of your favorite times.

Hats off to ~ Nick Phillips (re-issue producer), Glen Barros & John Burk (executive producers)...providing us with originality and the never-to-be-forgotten rhythmic styles of Latin and traditional jazz by ~ CAL TJADER!
