Customer Reviews:
More 80's groove.......2006-02-13
I recently was given this album by a friend. I say album, because it is on a record. I must say that this album sounds great. I wish they would release it on CD. Albums like this paved the way for smooth jazz. The instruments sound great and the composition of the songs is impecable. I give this 5 stars. Truly a masterpeace in terms of the jazz format begining to come out in the 1980s.
One of his Best.......2005-12-20
As far as singing Ronnie gives us a real treat with his versatility. His sax is always mellow and a blessing to the ears. But the two tracks, 2 and 3 includesThere's a way, and Stay Awake, both are beautifully written and performed. It is ashame that Heavy on Easy and either There's a way or Stay awake are not on his Greatest hits CD. Along with Friends and Lovers, and Every Generation, these are the songs that set Ronnie apart from other artists Jazz or otherwise.
Solid Ground Indeed.......2005-08-01
Once upon a time in the early 80's there was no such thing as smooth jazz. And when lighter hearted fusion was made it tended to have a far more diverse range of colors.Ronnie Laws comes from that older school of lite funk-jazz musicians who enjoyed some hefty R&B flavor in their music."Solid Ground" is definately more of a funky R&B album then anything jazzy but it has those nice 80's keyboards and on the title track and "Your Stuff" Mr.Laws is a damn good singer as well,no George Benson but certainly no Stanley Clarke on the mic lol.And for an album of this type, this vintage IT SOUNDS GOOD!No question about it.It is very well produced and poppy in many parts but if you know anything about my musical tastes it fits right into that framework. If you like the early 80's work of Jeff Lorber,Paul Hardcastle and George Duke you will likely find music to your liking here.
Truly a Masterpiece.......2004-08-17
I remember this album from when my mother used to clean the house on the weekends, and ever since it has became an essential part of my life. This album is the most well balanced by Ronnie Laws, other than the out of print "Every Generation". This album so be the textbook example of what saxophone jazz is to sound like. Amongst the albums highlights are "Your Stuff" (which features his brother Hubert on the flute), "Heavy On Easy", and "Good Feelings" (which features his sisters Debra and Eloise as backing vocals). Overall, you will not be disappointed
YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH THIS.......2003-03-05
I don't do many reviews; this might be my first or second, but listen up -- buy this CD. This is probably the best work from Ronnie Laws to date and the entire CD focuses around the latter period of Jazz (This was originally released in vinyl in the late '70's) where funk, R&B/soul and jazz came together in one piece of work. In my opinion, I would not equate this with smooth jazz -- this CD's texture and groove is well beyond that. 'Stay Awake' is one of the songs on the CD that makes you want to open your favorite bottle, curl up in the chaise with your woman (or man, however that applies) or yourself and just vibe. Not many dull moments to be found on this CD. If you know anyone who needs an introduction to modern jazz, this is the one to get
