Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lee in strong form.......2005-04-25

I hadn't listened to this one in a while, & just pulled it out--it sounds, if anything, stronger than when I first listened to it. Partly the pleasure is hearing Konitz on an adventurous program rather than his usual budget of chestnuts--the album opens with George Russell's "Ezz-Thetic", includes a couple Chick Corea tunes ("Duende" & the Monkish stride-piano blues "Hairy Canary"), an arrangement of a Chopin prelude, some intriguing tunes by Konitz's accompanist, pianist Harold Danko, three Konitz tunes (two of his staple contrafacts on standard chord changes--"It's You" & a completely bizarre "Hi Beck", with Danko playing entirely in the piano's tinkling high register--& a handsome waltz called "She's as Wild as Springtime"), & a free improvisation called "Ko". The playing is light & lyrical, with several tracks in waltztime (maybe it was a phase in Lee's output?: a slightly later album, the admittedly somewhat disappointing _Round & Round_, is entirely waltzes), & Konitz is simply in tremendous form, right from his opening snake-coil solo on "Ezz-Thetic". Leeophiles will definitely want to check this one out.
