TTTTTIIIIMMMMBBBBBEEEEEERRRNNNEEEE!!!! .......2006-08-19
This is a great cd.....Tom on the drumzzz- keepin the grooves really rockin -and TABES!!!! {craig taborn} the low end that Torn pulled out of the left hand of Tabes is really unreal**
All this material was done live - which is hard to believe when you listen to this over and over and over again like I have many countless nights-- Turn this one up !
Tim Berne has created the most original music of our time and needs to be recognized {when will DOWNBEAT feature this man?}
Tim puts these guys into their element right off the bat with the WRITING and THAT IS THAT! He knows too much for this world--science friction is also something to wear the grooves out of on the old turntable {one of TIMBO's other bands with MARC DUCRET ] and can write and sound like himself , which is the trick in music==== THE SHELL GAME is one of the best "jazz" concept albums of our time and Tim needs a key to NYCity for this one----DAVID TORN needs props too for making these guys sound so good {look for his release on ECM soon} the mixing and sound of the instruments puts you right in the studio with these 3 GIANTS of the DOWntown NYC scene-----
This music is beyond words--get one for your mom

this is definetly up there in my list.......2006-03-04
this is one of the best albums ive ever heard. every tune is awsome...the writing, the improvising, the recording quality, everything is awsome. tom rainey is the best drummer there is right now. tim berne is the most original sax player/composer right now. craig taborn is a technician and can play anything he wants...sick bass sounds on his keyboard!!!! i cant talk much about this album because the music speaks for itself....get this album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Interesting, arresting, recorded well..........2003-05-23
I bought this CD mainly because I was interested in Thirsty Ear's "Blue Series." Most of my purchases from that series have been delightful. This one is really no exception. It's the type of album that gets better over time. Berne's sax has never sounded better and this was my first time hearing Tom Rainey who is also arresting. Tim seems to really enjoy the trio format - and with results like this - who can blame him?
Expect the Unexpected.......2001-03-25
I was totally unfamiliar with the music of Tim Berne before I got this CD.It's part of Thirsy Ear records', "The Blue Series" which are all produced by Avant-Garde jazz pianist Matthew Shipp.The music is all instrumental and very much in the "Free Jazz" and "Avant-Garde Jazz" styles. On this CD,it's a trio; Tim Berne on alto sax, Craig Taborn on keyboards and electronics effects, and Tim Rainey on Drums. These are extremely talented musicians and the music is very different than any other Jazz style that I have heard before.If you are interested in something new, challenging and unpredictable,then you should check out this CD.The CD runs over 66 minutes with only 4 tracks,the last one running at over 29 minutes!!
