Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The evolution of a genius.......2002-11-07

I think that Sonny Rollins is one of Jazz' true geniuses, along with Armstrong, Ellington, Parker, Young, Monk, Miles, Sun Ra and Braxton. Not to say that others like Bechet, Hawkins, Hodges, Gillespie, Brownie, Gordon, Powell, Mingus, Evans, Coltrane, Ornette, Dolphy, Taylor, Ayler and such were not great musicians...
These are the earliest recordings by Rollins, and show his development from 1949, when he was 19 years old, to 1951. His talent shows from the beginning, but there is a process of maturity evident. The tracks are all loyal to the bebop tradition, including a bebop version of St. Louis blues, which displays how bebop and blues are closely related.
Some of the tracks feature bebop singing and scatting by Babs Gonzales. This is not my favorite style, but it does not stand in the way of the music.
There are good tracks with Miles Davis (from the album Dig) and with J.J. Johnson, and the sound is good for the period of the the recordings.
What I hear even in his early playing is his tremendous sense of rhythm, and his great talent for interesting and fresh musical phrases. And his sound - was his from day one.

Recommanded for Rollins' fans who want to hear where and how he started.
