Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Let's DO some dragging, shall we?.......2007-03-16

I'll keep the screaming to a minimum, unlike certain others here.

WHY this disc is bad is not due to the gender of the arranger, or even the performers for that matter, but to the spartan/barren/frigid/chintzy nature of arrangements and performances themselves. It's like listening to on-the-cheap orchestral arrangements from some B-grade, 1970s-era TV variety or game show. If one is going to take on the lush, sumptuous melodies of warmly cherished eras past, I'm sorry but they need to address that VERY NATURE of what made these songs THE STANDARDS that they now are.

There's simply no texture to be found here other than brittleness. No life. Or soul. The temperature meter never once broke ZERO. One does NOT have to be a dude to have any of those music-imbibing traits. But one does have to be SKILLED in order to capture any of those stirring essences in creating the arrangements and charts of such time-honored music. Even if I were to pretend that these were some sort of modernistic re-interpretive statement made drab as some sort of pronouncement of the era that we live and embark in, these performances are certainly NOT avant-garde, brain-twisting challenges, not by a Tiger Woods monster tee shot, nor do they challenge the artistic sensibilities normally associated with the regular fan of such standards, other than to say that this is GARBAGE. Give me Nelson Riddle on a BAD day, ANY day.

21st century indeed. More like 13th century. But then again, that would be an INSULT to the Gregorians. But wait...that was a bad example...a MAN thing example wasn't it, eh Screamer? To you, I'd recommend investing in a life.

To everyone else who cares about music...don't bother with this disc.

5 out of 5 stars DRAGGED INTO THE 21ST CENTURY..........2007-02-10

TWO OF THE THREE PREVIOUS REVIEWS WERE OVERTLY NEGATIVE. WHO KNOWS WHY.
PERHAPS EXAMPLES OF AMATEUR CRITICS TAKING OUT THEIR CHAUVINISM ON A
MUCH-BETTER-THAN-AVERAGE AGGREGATION OF EXCELLENT MUSICIANS (WHO JUST HAPPEN TO BE WOMEN), AND ON ARRANGEMENTS THAT NEED NO DEFENSE--SINCE THEY ARE CLEARLY A CUT ABOVE LOTS OF NYC AND LA BIG BAND CHARTS.

SOME GUYS, AND--SADLY--EVEN WOMEN, NEED TO BE DRAGGED INTO THE 21ST CENTURY OF MUSICAL PROGRESS (EVEN IF THEY ARE INSENSITIVE AND UNSKILLED
IN MATTERS OF MUSICAL FINESSE). I WANT TO THANK SHERRIE MARICLE AND
DIVA FOR DOING THEIR BIT OF THE DRAGGING. THEY SOUND LIKE FINE MUSICIANS
WHO HAVE BEEN SHORT-SHEETED BY A COUPLE OF IRRITATED BLAME-MERCHANTS
WHO WOULDN'T RECOGNIZE TALENT AND CREATIVITY IF IT SLAPPED THEM IN THE
FACE.

BUT, HEY! IT'S ALWAYS THE GUYS WHO CAN'T PLAY THAT GRIPE AND CUT AWAY.

1 out of 5 stars [Bad].......2003-04-15

...The drummer can barely keep time. There are some nice arrangements but I'd rather hear more competent musicians play them.

5 out of 5 stars What a swinging big band!.......2000-08-02

Wow! What a great band! This band swings with the best of them. I have waited a long time for a fresh breath of air to come along and breath life into today's big band sounds, and this is it! This CD has something for fans of all ages, with arrangements in the traditional style of the big bands of yesterday, as well as contemporary arrangements for the more progressive ear. John McNeil's arrangement on the title track ("I Believe in You") is quite extensive, with complicated lines existing simultaneously throughout the ensemble. The Michael Abene arrangement of "Happy Days are Here Again" is also impressive, with haunting flute and flugelhorn harmonies throughout. The great Tommy Newsom has penned the arrangement "Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald", which is recorded in honor of one of the greatest voices to ever walk the planet. There is not a lacking song on the CD. Every song is executed with outstanding musicianship and precision, a feat not easily accomplished with arrangements of this high difficulty level. Ms. Maricle has a fantastic ensemble in this group of talented women. I hope we continue to hear from them in the future. This is a "must own" for every fan of big band jazz.

2 out of 5 stars What happened to big bands?.......1999-11-03

This is pretty sad. The band isn't tight, doesn't swing, and the arrangements are mediocre college level. Even the solos don't go anywhere. This band's got possibilities, but a long way to go before it becomes top-notch.
