Customer Reviews:
Kyser historian says 'Great', but..........2005-04-18
A very nice collection for Harry Babbitt fans, but it has its mistakes- Why no "Little Audrey" songs? For the uninitiated, 'Little Audrey" is Babbitt's falsetto kid voiced- alter ego, who surfaced in Kay Kyser records such as PLAYMATES ,and THREE LITTLE FISHES. Since there are some rarities here, other obscure examples of 'Audrey" would be HONEST JOHN and WHAT'S WHAT, both relatively obscure but enormously entertaining Kyser songs. In reviewing this CD's companion piece, THE BEST OF GINNY SIMMS, i must admit I wrongly mentioned ALL GOD'S CHILLUN as being on that CD, but it's on this one. Liner notes here are by Gary Theroux, and though informative, are sometimes wrong (Hey Gary, where's my Kyser script?). First, he states that Kyser copped the 'singing song titles' gimmick from Sammy Kaye (not so, Theroux!). He is kind enough to mention me as 'Kyser historian Steve Beasley' , but then my quote is edited erroneously. Hmmm. He also states Kyser played NO commercial dates during WW2. In fact, he DID play those that were booked previous to our involvement in the War, but not a big deal. Finally, he states Harry rejoined Kyser in '46 for 3 years after the war, but it was only until December '48. And Kyser DID do one year of television, but it was TWO seasons within that year, not one as stated. Artwork and graphics are gorgeous!
