Customer Reviews:
When Malindy Sings.......2006-06-06
I actually bought this about 5 years ago, but just recently sat down and listened to it CAREFULLY all the way through. My assessment is that it's a great introduction to the category of "Soul Jazz"-- a category that is often overlooked by mainstream listeners in a genre of music that is not mainstream itself. One song that made the whole CD worth buying is "When Malindy Sings" by Freddie Roach. (It seems like I've heard this song several times but just never knew who wrote it.) Because the cross section of artists is significant, it could also serve as an introduction to a specific artist.
BLUE FUNK.......2006-02-15
"So Blue, So Funky" is a straight re-issue of a 1991 Blue Note compilation titled "BLUE FUNK". (The cover and the title are different, but the track listing is the same.)
Good, but not the best compilation around.......2002-11-19
There are good tracks on this compilation, especially Jimmy McGriff's AWESOME 'All About My Girl', Lou Donaldson's 'Everything I Do Goin' Be Funky', and Grant Green 'Ain't It Funky'. However, the other tracks do not fare that well in comparison. The overall album is good, but could be far better knowing all the gems that Blue Note treasures in its vaults.
Anyway, the title is right: It is a very funky album and worth checking out if you don't have any of the songs above mentioned.
Blue note is at it again!.......2002-06-25
Blue Note records comes up with another solid compilation of break-beat jazz ripe for the sampling. Featuring some of the sickest keyboard players soloing over funky rhythms, this album will whet your appetite for more of the things Blue Note seems to do so well.
No wonder it's the most sampled label in the world.
I picked this album up after I'd listened to their 4-disc set of "Blue Break Beats" and was still hungry for more. I was completely satisfied.
RARE BUT ESSENTIAL B-3 GROOVES, A GREAT STARTING POINT !.......2000-05-22
If you're just getting into the classic B-3 organ combo sound, or have been into it for sometime, but want to get your hands on some great tracks which have fallen out of print, this is THE COLLECTION. And probably something very different than you're used to hearing. - - I mean, its the difference between Chris's Steak and greasy hot barbeque at your favorite soul food joint. Both are good, but I guarentee you, sometimes its best to have that hot sauce dripping down your chin with a bit of Bro' McDuff blaring on the juke box (though you might not exactly impress your date... especially after you pop a button off your suit get that stuff all over your shirt.)
This CD features the groovy soulful side of the Blue Note organ combo sound, the highligh of which are several grooves that got deep down in the vaults. Worth the purchase alone is BOOP BOP BING BASH, from an out of print Blue Note CD featuring Billy Gardner on organ and featuring George Braithe, a frequent John Patton/Ben Dixon Grant Green sideman. John Patton's Fat Judy really has that early '60s B-3 combo juke box feel. Grant Green tears the roof off on AIN'T IT FUNKY NOW with a very James Brown feel.
After you hear this, check out the artists themselves... Freddie Roach, Babyface Wilette, Big John Patton and Grant Green (Blues for Lou !) especially...
