Customer Reviews:
Louis Before The Hot Fives.......2002-09-28
This is the second disc in a French series. As with most chronological surveys some period dross slightly diminishes the impact- and my rating. Still, this is a strong recommendation and on balance superior to the first volume.
The main reason for this is that Louis Arrmstrong proclaims his presence on 13 of the 24 tracks, joining Sidney Bechet who was probably the only musician in the same league by this time. Doubtless it's misleading to call this a partnership, given their obvious competitiveness. But it gives rise to some marvellous music which triumphs over the pre- electric recording technology Just listen to The blistering version of Cake Walkin' Babies From Home, surely one of the greatest tracks in all early jazz. Even with Louis not present interest is well maintained. Some tracks seem to have fared better than others in remastering, but you buy this for the timelessmusic that rises irresistably from the scratches. And buy this, or some equivalent issue, you certainly should!
