Customer Reviews:
Good & Funky.......2005-07-26
from the cratediggers of luv' n' haight comes this super funky re-release originally on jaro records from 1972 (with a couple of bonus cuts from a limited edition cassette from 1975). on all of the tracks, multi-instrumentalist lewis gets down on the trumpet, tenor or baritone sax while james moody backs him up on the hammond b3 and/or clavinet. switching between a trio (add drums), a quartet (add drums and guitar) or quintet (if you include the drums, guitar and overdubs), the sound compares to outings by lou donaldson, donald byrd and johnny hammond. it mixes the best of those funky old blue note releases and soulful mid 70s muse recordings. there's even a hint of lou rawls on the vocal cut. shuckin' n' jivin' is all dancefloor friendly (even the ballads are nice and slow dancing tunes) in a rare groove and retro way and completely smokin' for just listening.
Good Jazz-Funk recording.......2000-12-22
Two of the selections, "Cissy Strut" and "Them Changes", probably should not have been included on this CD, which compiles a long out of print lp and two "demo tape" quality songs. The aforementioned were used both to get jobs and to sell to conventioneers at the Red Lion Inn in Seatle (according to the liner notes). The sound is what you would expect from a hotel lounge with amateur recording equipment and the drummer is too showy and "busy".
Of the other four tracks, recorded with a slightly different lineup, the sound is quite good, and the band is more fluid, more cohesive. The title track features a neat dynamic between the drummer and the conga player (if the congas were overdubbed-as some of the horn parts were-this was done very cleverly!). Johnny Lewis's soloing, on tenor and trombone, is also nice, as is the organ, and guitar. It's a good band.
If you like boogaloo organ music, you should hear this. If you REALLY like boogaloo organ music, consider buying it.
