Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Cream of the Crop.......2007-03-25

My household devours rare soul voraciously, so when I stumbled upon this disc my interest was piqued. You really never know with these compilations, however, so I was wary of purchasing it at first. The customers that reviewed it seemed impressed, so I decided to purchase it along with the New Orleans funk disc. Both discs are on the British Soul Jazz label, and both are outstanding in there own ways. The Miami disc is a true summer mix. The songs are upbeat, danceable and smooth. A great CD to put on at a barbeque, just relaxing and enjoying life. My boyfriend was thoroughly impressed also - a must own for any soul fan. My personal favorite track is the silly and hilarious "Funky Cat" which heralds the joys of Cat Nip! Hip hop fans may also notice that KRS-One sampled the beginning of "Cramp your Style" by All the People in his 1989 song "I'm still #1" - and you know KRS doesn't sample anything but gems!

5 out of 5 stars Sweet sweet sweetness.......2007-01-21

Every single track on this is killer, except maybe that one about "don't make a good girl go bad..." But all the other tracks: killer. That one song's probably not that bad though, its just tough to hang with the rest of them. If somebody came out with that song today, and nobody else had before, I would probably be impressed and dig it. But most music you hear on the radio these days is substantially less killer than the rest of the songs on this compilation. So the verdict: K I L L E R, even that one song. As a matter of fact, enjoy that song. That song rocks, as do the rest of them.

5 out of 5 stars Raw Funk at its Best.......2004-04-20

When this came out in 2003 (i think), it was a very welcome addition to my collection. A MUST HAVE for any funk or soul lover. It is a collection of wikked late 60s and early 70s funk/soul. You may have heard some tracks already but some not.
Very gritty, excellent. The best tracks which are also old personal favourites of mine like "90% of me is you" by Gwen Mccrae, "you gotta be a man" by Helene Smith. In short its all good. If your into funk and soul you need this, believe!

4 out of 5 stars Hooray for Soul Jazz records.......2003-09-14

This is a great compilation of funk-infused shoulda-been-golden oldies. Many of these songs are full of style, personality, and have lovable lyrics; highlights include "I get lifted," "funky cat," and the lovely "don't let the good times go bad." The only reason I didn't give this CD 5 stars is that I feel Soul Jazz Record's "New York Noise" compilation is a more captivating CD as a whole. Heck, just buy both!

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC COLLECTION OF SOUL.......2003-06-17

This compilation is essential. Maybe only 3 tracks that are filler. The rest is amazing. Couldn't ask for a better deal. If you like raw soul then this is a must-have.
