Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable Player.......2006-02-20

Dave McKenna is an unbelievable two-handed saloon piano player.
Many times you feel there is more than one piano player playing.
He is a very creative improvisor who never strays too far from the familiar melody line. Another one of his many fine albums.

5 out of 5 stars A unique piano style.........1999-09-21

McKenna has a way of keeping one entertained in a solo context, which is quite difficult to do. He can play at astonishing speeds, with the most active left hand I have ever heard, but he is also sensitive with ballads. One does not miss the absence of bass or drums, but instead gets caught up in the way he approaches each song, at first in a seemingly simple manner, until you LISTEN to the complexity of what he is doing. This is a unique musician in fine form.

5 out of 5 stars McKenna delivers again.......1999-04-01

Dave McKenna is one of the most powerful piano players in jazz. "Giant Strides" fits his personality: forceful, wry, and overwhelming. McKenna's technique is so superb, so enchanting, you are literally blown away listening to this CD. He obviously relishes playing in a stride style. His left hand is as good as it gets in jazz. It takes some kind of guts to pull off a solo album, and he does it regularly. This is a 1979 release on the reasonably priced Milestone label. A must buy for any McKenna maven. For everyone else, what an introduction to Dave McKenna.
