5 out of 5 stars AFTER 20 YEARS, THE CELESTIAL HAWK FINALLY ON CD!.......2002-09-22

It took ECM over 20 years to release Keith Jarrett's three movement piano concerto, but it was well worth the wait. "The Celestial Hawk" is one of my very favorite Jarrett works and one of his few classical symphonic compositions and recordings. He experiments with Eastern sounds here and leads the listener on a journey through gorgeously, softly melodic realms and furiously dissonent passages. His piano work on "The Celestial Hawk" is a marvel to experience, but it is clear that Jarrett for the first time is equally adept at orchestrial arrangement. This is a stunning musical work that is at once simple, then grandiose and in many passages almost terrifying. Each movement has a character all its own, and in the end...at the final minutes of the third movement...the concerto moves from minor to major...from darkness to light and resolves itself in some of the most melodically reflective passages Jarrett has ever played. A work to be enjoyed over and over again throughout the years.

LA BELLEZZA CONOSCE STRADE INCONSUETE : IL CONCERTO PER PIANOFORTE E ORCHESTRA DI K.JARRETT

Nel 1980 (cinque anni dopo il "Concerto di Colonia", per intenderci) Jarrett esegue alla Carnegie Hall questo suo concerto per pianoforte e orchestra. L'organico ý quello della Syracuse Simphony, diretto da Chistopher Keene.

Si tratta di un concerto che se proprio non riproduce la "forma sonata", cioý lo stilema classico per antonomasia, ci va assai vicino. Dirý subito che al primo ascolto, specie per la parte iniziale, puý sembrare un tantino sconnesso: le prime battute danno l'idea di una ricerca di dialogo tra pianoforte e rullante che poco si adatta all'impegnativo genere.

Ma la musica si mostra via via davvero ricca di invenzioni (penso che le idee melodiche e ritmiche di quest'opera ad altri sarebbero bastate per un intero ciclo), e il gioco del ritorno dei temi rende il primo movimento di "The Celestial Hawk" tutt'altro che trascurabile. Il secondo non richiede cautele: ý una meraviglia, il tema subito enunciato ý di quelli che si fissano nella memoria; come capita del resto anche con illustri autori classici (Mozart, primo fra tutti), l'anima dei migliori concerti per piano ý quasi sempre nel movimento lento. Nel terzo movimento, poi, il virtuosismo di Jarrett si sarebbe potuto facilmente scatenare: invece ancora la suggestione della forma classica torna con una dolcissima danza, davvero sorprendente.

In definitiva, un gran bel concerto. Ricordo che Jarrett ý tornato piý volte alle composizioni di tipo classico: ma a questo livello, secondo me, solo col disco "Bridge of Light" (e in particolare con la bellissima "Elegy fo violin and String Orchestra") del 1994.
