Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another entree into the French jazz hall of fame.......2005-02-08

Right up there with Jean-Michel Pilc, Jacky Terrason, and Michel Portal. High praise, coming from me. Really, the French are making some of the most wonderful jazz on the planet. One thinks of, for example, Rita Marcotulli, Daniel Mille, Sylvie Courvoisier, and Jean-Pierre Mas, all players with a distinct voice and unique conception.

Listen. With #1 Soul Role, Stýphane Guillaume establishes himself at the very apex of French jazz. A player every bit as comfortable with bass clarinet (check out his awesome solo on "Maýtre Nhým," on which he plays five[!] different wind instruments) as with alto sax, flute, tenor, and soprano sax, Guillaume also proves himself to be a composer of rare depth and emotion, moving easily between cabaret, ballad, post-bop, and chanson stylings--and, miraculously--sounding completely at home in each genre.

Someone not only to watch very closely in the future, but a player and composer who's already established himself as someone to contend with, even if he's relatively unknown on this side of the Atlantic.
