5 out of 5 stars 1957, that magic year.......2006-09-17

Every time I LOVE an album, it always ends up being from 1957. That aside, "Monk's Music" is an absolutely GREAT album. And wait until you hear the SACD recording quality in STEREO. It's tremendous. Hawkins on tenor is like a dream. Coltrane is great on here as well, but I can't help imagining Charlie Rouse on here instead of Coltrane. I have always felt that Rouse was the greatest tenor to ever have played with Monk. My second favorite for Monk, on tenor, is Johnny Griffin. If you're not familiar with Gigi Gryce, check out his early work. He got a little weird later on in his career, but his fifties and earlier work is superb on alto. Copeland on trumpet fits like a glove on this album and Wilbur Ware does a great job on bass, but ART BLAKEY as usual, ALWAYS knows WHAT to play and WHEN to play it, no matter WHO he is playing with. This is a desert island choice. Magic to me.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Monk.......2006-09-06

Man, this is one great CD. This and "Straight No Chaser" are my two favorite Monk titles, and Monk is my favorite jazz artist. It doesn't get much better than this for me - until I came across this SACD hybrid version. I love it! They obviously remastered the CD using DSD (instead of just grabbing the latested PCM remaster and sticking it on the disc along with the SACD layer) because this CD layer blows every other remaster of this title out of the water. It's 1957, this is one of the first stereo jazz recordings made, and they got it right.

5 out of 5 stars A "Top Jazz Record" Contender.......2006-09-05

I have loved this album since I first heard it in the late seventies. I still have the vinyl, and just got the CD. It is a solid hit from first to last. Like "Kind of Blue," it is an album that sounds both bold and inspired as well as inevitable. If you have any reason at all to think you might like it, buy it. And it is a perfect intro to Monk, too. Several of his greatest compositions, and a crew of players that couch Monk perfectly in a setting that allows what is most inventive about him to shine, but seems at the same time less jarring or harsh than some of his recordings can. Just a towering jazz landmark to me. The feel, the sound of the room, the odd pairing of tenors, all of it come together fantastically here. Listen to it!

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!.......2006-01-02

Great takes on Monk's music by a fantastic cast of characters. Worth the price of admission: Monk audibly prompting the first solo chorus in *Well, You Needn't*, "Coltrane! Coltrane!"

5 out of 5 stars Ruby My Dear.......2004-08-29

Ok, this set has several of Monk's classsic compositions and is solid throughout. How could it not be with Monk , Coltrane, Blakey and Coleman Hawkins. I will say this..You WILL NEVER hear a better rendition of Ruby My Dear than the one rendered here. Hawkins playing is absolutely magnificent on that track. It would be worth the price of this cd just for that one cut. The bonus is that the rest of the cuts are extremely well played Monk Music so you can't miss with this one.
