Customer Reviews:
Mellow Metheny.......2007-01-11
A very mellow, enjoyable Metheny offering. Something I like to listen to on a Saturday morning, with my coffee and paper or play while I'm driving. It's essentially Pat by himself, acoustic and electric guitar and bass that he layers over each other. It's very melodic and a bit sparse if you're used to him having Lyle Mays and a full band backing him up. "New Chatuaqua" and "Sueno Con Mexico" are two of my absolute favourites.
I think that non-Metheny fans would enjoy this album.
The Great Explorer.......2007-01-09
Pat Metheny begins exploring new music routes from almost his very first release. New Chautauqua is the perfect example.
Metheny is all alone on this album, overdubbing himself on 6 and 12 strings, Acoustic and Electric guitars, Bass and 15 stings harp guitar.
The ensemble is difficult to classify in any music category, since it is a mixture of Folk, new age and Jazz.
Released in 1978, it is still very fresh, relaxing and pleasant to hear today.
"New Chautauqua" is a must own for every Pat Metheny fan; whether you are into Jazz, new age or Folk, as long as you love the sound of the guitar; you will extremely enjoy this album.
I personally rank "New Chautauqua" as one of my favorite Pat Metheny's albums.
I wish I could play guitar like that.......2006-11-10
Great music. Old tunes worth purchasing.
Great American Road Music.......2006-08-31
Metheny's an innovator and has been all over the map over his long career in terms of styles, moods, textures, and sounds.
Here we have an early effort in which he takes his guitar and overdubs an introspective, wide-open-spaces musical journey across America, weaving in jazz, folk, country, rock, mountain music, and everything in between. If you love his work on Joni Mitchell's Amelia (performed live on Shadows and Light), you'll love the sound of this record.
The mood is mellow but not dull, quiet but not silent, and the results are spectacular. This is the cd to take with you on a trip across the western frontier, or a short hop to Burger King. Works either way.
I think I'll make a record today..........2006-06-13
I get the impression that Pat just had a creative itch that needed scratching in between PMG projects when he sat down and put this little session together. This is an entirely solo effort - all sounds are made by Pat and consist only of various overdubbed guitars from electric bass to the freakishly tuned 12-string electric also heard on Icefire from Watercolors and everything in between.
I agree with the "Sunday morning" feel that other reviewers have used to describe the music here, and that's probably when Pat got up and just decided to put this thing together. Stylistically he explores everything from the chicken-fried vibe found on American Garage to an ethereal, looped-up (before there were loop sequencers, mind you) deep space sound that would make Bill Frisell proud. It all sounds to me like he had a number of creative loose ends left over from the prolific PMG work of the time that he just felt like he wanted to do something with on vinyl, and this is the result.
It is quite short and it is not the masterpiece that Watercolors is. But then again nothing is and it is enjoyable enough to listen to on its own...just a young genius sitting down one morning and briefly gracing us with his talent.
