Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The start of a great journey.......2003-03-09

This CD reissues material released on the Hindsight label and then expands on it. This issue of 1937 transcription recordings captures Woody and the Band that Plays the Blues in great sound and without the restrictions of commercial fodder that Decca had in place at the same time. The band is loose swinging and with lots of great songs. Some of the charts are big band dixieland featuring Woody's clarinet prominently and at length. Also notable are the times when Joe Bishop gets to solo on fluegelhorn. A pioneer in his own right. Woody has his first ( as far as I'm aware ) recorded solo on alto sax on Jazz Me Blues. Some of the selections do have vocals and were made for dancing, but are still pretty good big band music. Buy it and you will have an enjoyable time.
