Customer Reviews:
Terrific musicianship, terrific arrangements, terrific jazz.......2005-12-11
My 19 year-old jazz drummer son gave me this CD 2 years ago, and every time I pop it into my car's CD player I smile all the way through the traffic jams. The arrangements are in a variety of styles (bop, ballads, big band, cool ensemble pieces), and Waldman is second to none in his ability to bring sparkle and life to a standard tune. All of the musicians are top-notch, but Colaiuta on percussion does stuff I've never heard anyone else do. (Including my son, for the time being!)
There are many impressive works on the album, including a turn on "Favorite Things" with some really interesting poly-rhythms. But if you only heard the "Jetsons" theme and nothing else, you would have spent your money well. Everyone's playing a million miles an hour on this terrific arrangement; the horn section is tight and powerful, Waldman displays great dexterity and ingenuity on the piano, and Colaiuta on the drums...well, words can't describe his incredible technique and creativity. Somehow they've packed the energy of an atomic reactor into a single song; prepare to be blown away!
A jazz masterpiece........2005-11-08
It's difficult for me to try and find the proper way to explain how great Vinnie Colaiuta is as a drummer. How do you explain Michelangelo's work in the Sistine Chapel? Vinnie Colaiuta is the Paganini of our time. This recording is his best recording to date. Randy Waldman has made an unbelievable record. His arrangements are extremely complex and very difficult. As far as jazz records go this ranks right up there next to, Dave Brubeck's, "Time Out" and all the other classic jazz recordings of all time. Randy Waldman is featured on piano along with Vinnie on drums and John Patitucci on bass. Other great musicians appear like Gary Burton, Branford Marsalis, Michael Brecker and many others. I was stunned when I heard this record. You wont believe your ears. It's some of the most beautiful arrangements of some of the best songs ever. I have always thought that, 'Schindler's List' was one of the most beautiful songs ever written but who would have ever thought it would be so good in jazz form. I can't say enough of this great work. It's a complete masterpiece.
There are so many great drum solos on this recording and Vinnie is on the same level musically as the legendary classical violinist, Michael Rabin. Like Michael Rabin's violin playing, Vinnie's drumming is simply life altering. You don't have to be a drummer to comprehend although no drummer alive can come close to his conceptual approach to polyrhythms or his clean musical execution but you will feel it, the shifting pulse, the odd groupings and the accented open rolls. Randy Waldman is one of the supreme pianists in the world today. Randy, thank you for capturing the virtuosity of Vinnie in a way that none of the other thousands of records he has appeared on could not. In the song, 'Forrest Gump', Randy proves that his technique speaks for itself and he is in the same league as Keith Jarrett, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea and Dave Brubeck. Randy Waldman approaches the piano in the same manner that Glen Gould did, that is, with total perfection of notes, rhythmic accuracy and swings hard. An honorary mention must go to Michael Sembello; His solo on, `Bali Hai' is absolutely incredible. What an immense pleasure it is to listen to, its simple awe-inspiring. This is a must buy. -MICHAEL CORRAL
Greatest thing I've heard in a while.......2001-08-23
Can you only go up to 5 stars? This album is amazing. You've heard these players on all kinds of records but here they get a chance to stretch out a little (who am I kidding--stretch out a LOT!) Great arrangements, amazing solos, clever ensemble parts--this album clearly shows that Randy took a lot of time to get things just right (and to give you your money's worth). You can listen over and over and still there'll be things you've missed. And as an added bonus---great guest soloists, and for you drum-stick-twirlers: "Vinnie" (who's never sounded better). Randy, John, and Vinnie deserve to be heard by a much larger audience. You definately won't be disappointed with this album (or their previous one "Wigged Out"). Demand that they come to your town.
conductor, arranger, pianist & Grammy Winner...done it all.......2001-08-05
With inventive arrangements and guest musicians galore...Waldman sends the jazz community reeling, or should I say "Unreeling"...Randy is in a class by himself, always giving the "jazz lover" what they want...and begging for more!
Remember Waldman working with the Manhattan Transfer on vocal arrangements...Streisand on the classic "Somewhere", one of my favorite songs and what a haunting arrangement, thanks to Randy.
Leave it to this master of artistry to excite the average and above average jazz fan with his magical touch on ~ "THE JETSONS"(gives space travel a whole new meaning)..."SCHINDLER'S LIST", the John Williams theme from Spielberg's Academy Award Winning film..."AMERICA", Broadway hit "West Side Story" - the Leonard Bernstein big dance production has Watts, McChesney and Randy whipping up a special treat for one and all...my personal favorite is "FORREST GUMP", great film with Tom Hanks and the unforgettable music of Alan Silvestri that became another character in the story...last track "MANIAC", shows another side of this one-of-a-kind arranger/musician, reaches out and grabs you.
Entire album is a gas...hats off to Kevin Clark (producer) ~ Studio City String Orchestra ~ all the various guest artists and Concord Jazz for this special album featuring the talented ~ RANDY WALDMAN!
