Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Get on the Trane!.......2006-12-06

This might be my favorite Coltrane album. The greatest tenor player ever displayed his virtuosity on the speedy "Russian Lullaby," but he also revealed a deeper, more introspective side to his playing. There is an incredible prescence and potent atmosphere on this record from 1958, especially on the two wonderful ballads, tracks 2 and 4 respectively. If you like jazz, and particularly Coltrane, you'll find yourself playing this cd again and again. It's that good!

4 out of 5 stars SOUL EYES: good bait, indeed.......2005-09-21

an excellent outing from Coltrane in 1958. the playing is flawless and full of talent. "Theme For Ernie" and "Russian Lullabye" are especially exquisite. a nice album.

5 out of 5 stars Coltrane with the Red Garland Trio...great..........2003-09-09

I am not a huge Trane fan...no, let me put that a different way; I like Trane in certain motifs - on "Ballads", then with Miles on "Kind Of Blue",and "Relaxin'", and then with the Red Garland Trio. That's as much Coltrane as I need - and so here is the last of my Trane Trilogy in this CD, "Soultrane". He pushes the melodic and harmonic envelope without ever losing the melody in all three of these settings. For those who have trouble with Coltrane (and I know there are a lot of folks out there who do), dig into these CDs, in that order. You'll really be doing yourself a favor.

5 out of 5 stars Totally satisfying time with the mid-career Coltrane..........2003-04-29

I submitted a review of this two months ago pointing out that the track listing is completely wrong for this CD. It has not been published, so I am resubmitting. This album actually contains the following five tunes: Good Bait; I Want to Talk About You; You Say You Care; Theme for Ernie and Russian Lullaby. Fellow players are Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Arthur Taylor on drums. It lasts 40 minutes and was engineered by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder in early 1958. At that time Coltrane was not into the "free jazz" and dissonance which marked his 1965-67 releases on the Impulse label. The sounds here are adventurous but melodic and won't scare away the non-avant garde jazz lover at all. This is one of the best of his releases from the late 50's as a leader, and was created just a year before he showed up as a vital part of Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" production. If you like saxophone, buy this. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Sound from the Master.......2003-04-09

JVC's XRCD's have the best quality sound of any cd's I have heard. Not the detail from a 24bit/96kHz(192kHZ) stereo DVD-A or SACD, but the sound quality is exceptional. Russian Lullaby is absolute sonic bliss! Spend the extra money and try the XRCD version.
