Customer Reviews:
Great idea, poor execuation.......2005-08-18
The fact that a Mingus Big Band Does exsist, is quite awesome. To be able to hear mingus compositions in the big band format is something that mingus never did during his career, so MBB is doing more than just rehashing old material. But many, many problems arise. First, Mingus's music was good enough when it was performed by himself. He in many ways put the final word on his songs, no "new" arragement will ever be able to truly add to mingus's original recordings. The true problem here is the contemporary "fluff" or the arrgements, soloing and sound quality. Jazz, imho, should just be recorded live straight to tape. In the booklet, you can clearly see instruments being compressed and, basically, the studio is to big of a factor in the sound of the MBB. Mingus's music was primal, not polished (with exceptions on both). The soloists here are another problem, they come no where near Mingus's bands of the 50-70's (Booker Ervin, Roland Kirk, Horace Parlin, Dannie Richmond, Jaki Byard, Clifford Jordon, Ect.). Only the Baritone sax player makes impressive solos on "Black Saint" and "Love's Fury". So why even 3 stars?, the set list. Many of these songs are very, very rare and are hard to find elsewhere.
Tonight At Noon- Charlie Mingus Big Band.......2002-12-27
I wish I would have listened to the music samples of this CD
first. I agree these musicians on this CD are very good, but
I love big swinging jazz bands like Herman, Basie, Kenton, Fedchoke, etc. ect.ect. The Mingus Big Band sounded more classical to me. I believe when you play jazz music you should play strictly jazz music and not a classical sound in my humble opinion. If you want play classical music you should join a symphony orchestra and don't mix with jazz music.
Plateau Breaker.......2002-11-19
This album broke new ground with me. I thought I knew jazz until I heard this. In this album we have new instruments (not used in jazz much), all kinds of timing variations and what I think is a great recording. You will not be sorry if you purchase this.
finally, great posthumous Mingus.......2002-07-06
I never have been totally convinced by many of the Mingus 'ghost band' recordings. Something missing. I think they finally put it together here, capturing the lyrical sensuality and ominous edge.
Gold Standard.......2002-06-10
This CD is as good as any session this band has previously recorded, save possibly Times Square. It is fresh, compelling, and full of great musicianship. And Elvis Costello's "Beautiful Lady" is perfect: not too much EC but a fine add. If you like this band, add this one to the collection with little hesitation.
