Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nothing not to like, just not breaking new ground..........2003-01-19

What's wrong with this disc: It's a compilation, so you don't get an album conceived by the creative musicians to have a certain effect on the listeners. Since the eight selections cover 13 years of performing, there is variety in the membership of the ensemble and the setting. Since this project was dedicated to show how Dave and his men handled pop and jazz "standards" there are no "originals." What's RIGHT with the CD: It's a compilation, and one gets Dave in a variety of moods, locations, and with varied sidemen, over 13 years of development. One also gets to hear how improvisation changes and improves and deepens and lengthens tunes one has mostly heard before. Those new to Dave have a wise pick here, which will draw you in and make you a fan and not be too challenging. Veteran Brubeck owners probably already have most of these songs on their original albums, but still may want this bunch grouped together. From the 11 kickin' minutes of "St. Louis Blues" performed live at Carnegie Hall to the five minutes of "I Feel Pretty" from "West Side Story" this is all good. No, it isn't the dynamic "Time Out" record, but then, nothing else is, either. What is on this CD is all good and worth owning.

One of the Colunbia's records. Definitely not "Time" album, but a lovely thing. Gerry Mulligan's participation in Ellington's tune (Things Ain't What They Used To Be) makes this track the most interesting in the album.
