Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Col;umbia Basie, 1936-41.......2006-03-25

There simply are not superlatives to apply to the music on this set. This is the Basie "Old Testament" band at its best with soloists such as Buck Clayton, "Sweets" Edison, Buddy Tate and most of all, Lester Young backed up by the finest rhythm section in the history of jazz.

Definitive is one of several European labels rendering a valuable service by reissuing material such as this which the bean counters of the major labels shy away from.

3 out of 5 stars 3 stars both Complete Columbia recordings.(1936-41,1941-51)........2005-03-16

Yes sound on this 4 Cd is not good on some songs, but this Cd + Complete Columbia recordings 1941-1951 (both on Definitive Records) I buy on jazzmessengers.com and this was good trade (cca 50$).
I think that Sony music with their horrible commercial orientation isn't able to made similar complet like this, only commercial best of Basie like lastest incomplete box.

1 out of 5 stars Bad sound.......2004-09-22

This spanish label has some very good releases and others are just plain awful. This one says is 24 bit remaster, but dont let that fool you, the sound is not good. The latest Columbia box is a lot better, even though is not complete.
