Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Still sounds fresh.......2007-01-11

It's hard to believe this work is almost 50 years old. It still sounds great. Gotta love those Mangione brothers.

4 out of 5 stars Cannonball did it again!.......2004-09-20

Just two years prior to this album Cannonball Adderley discovered Wes Montgomery playing in a Philly's bar. A couple of years later he did it again discovering the Mangione bros and signing him for Riverside. He discovered at least another player, Chuck, who in later years became another huge star but with more commercial music than what it is played here. The sax players here are great too, Larry Combs on alto and Sal Nistico on tenor. The music. This is hard bop, real Jazz. Acustic instruments, standards, Jazz originals, the full blowing thing. And this album is really fresh. The opener is a great intro to the album. Energetic hard bop jazz. The second tune is "Secret love" played with a nice up tempo, not too fast as it is often played. "Alice" is a fine major line on a typical hard bop thing a-la Clifford Brown or a-la Cannonball. So happy and refreshing! Then you'll find "Struttin with Sandra" a very nice minor blues. Well... the album goes on this way. I don't want to ruin your pleasure in discovering the rest of the program ... I agree that this album together with "Hey baby!" represents a big Jazz deal. Two not so well known albums but two gems in their own right. Probably this one is the best among the two.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Jazz Album!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-06-22

I'm not going to rave about this cd as a 1970's Chuck fan, but I will as a hard bop fan. This album is real down home hard bop jazz. No corny jazz, this is the real thing!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars You may not know that Chuck did some serious jazz.......2000-06-04

Don't get me wrong... I liked Chuck's work in the 70's. It was brilliant instrumental pop... but "The Jazz Brothers" is a hard-boppin' kick in the pants. This album and "Hey Baby" are incredible works of jazz and show off the talents of Chuck, his brother Gap and Sax great Sal Nistico. It's even more incredible when you consider that Chuck was something like 19 years old when this album was recorded. There's some great in-your-face blues-derived stuff on this disc like the cool minor blues "Struttin' With Sandra" and the rabid "Something Different" (those two tunes are worth the price of the disk by themselves). Check out "Hey Baby" too... there's a killer rendition of the standard "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes."
