Original and festive.......2004-10-22
I've been watching the Bayou Brass at Disneyland for years, and this CD really captures the joy and playfulness that you see in their sets there in New Orleans Square. I've actually had it a few years and it's among my very favorite Christmas albums of all time!
The arrangements are all their own, and while lots of Christmas albums claim to put a "fresh spin" on classic carols, that's the truth of this album. The soulful sax solo on "Silent Night" makes that most famous of carols seem almost melancholy, a really unique interpretation and one of the best tracks. "We Three Kings" also has that haunting quality. The other arrangements are of the crisp Dixieland variety, with fun rhythms and musical flourishes you just won't hear anywhere else. "Good King Wenceslas" even includes an entire non-holiday song, "Nothing Personal," in the mix.
If you haven't see the BBB, you might find their ad-libbed song intros and goofy singing, especially on the "Winter Wonderland" track, a little distracting and unprofessional, but I think it only adds to the festivity. If you like Christmas brass music, or just want to recreate the spirit of Christmas at Disneyland, this CD is a must.
