Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" For That Well-Rounded Jazz Collection.......2001-03-29

Coleman Hawkins In The 50's -- Body And Soul Revisited delivers an exciting sampling of the Hawk's wonders. These beautifully remastered recordings from his Decca years showcase his mastery of the tenor sax and genious with improvisation and phrasing -- and makes it sound effortless. This has also become a favorite of my teenage daughter, who readily recognizes the influence of Coleman Hawkins on today's Jazz scene.

5 out of 5 stars Anytime's Right for Revisiting Hawkins.......2001-02-18

The Coleman Hawkins version of "Body and Soul" in 1939 was a milestone for jazz, as Ken Burns pointed out in his PBS series. This splendid reissue from the Decca vaults picks up the tenor saxophonist during his prime in the 1950s as he revisits the title tune and 20 other songs with various combinations of the New York-based jazz giants. Hawkins handles everything from "Midnight Sun" to "Ornithology" to "Where Is Your Heart?" (the song from "Moulin Rouge") with ease. This CD makes you realize -- as Burns pointed out -- that the Hawk's music is very good listening now, just as it was at anytime dating back to the '30s.
