Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Much more than an Ellington imitator.......2006-02-10

The Hal McIntyre band alone tried to move the Ellington approach to jazz writing beyond plagiarism - unlike, say, Charlie Barnet who tended to just copy Ellingtonian styling. Gunther Schuller in his "History of Jazz Swing Era Vol.II" picks out two 'lesser' bands for mention, McIntyre's and Bob Chester's, albeit for very different reasons. This CD demonstrates McIntyre's search for perfection in the section work rather than featuring soloists, and shows how on the pop tunes of the day, he could impose great writing and good performances to lift them into the jazz realm. A highly recommended issue for any serious big band collector.

5 out of 5 stars Great Big Band Sound.......2005-05-13

When I heard that Hal McIntyre left Glenn Miller in order to form his own swing band, I assumed his arrangements would mirror Miller's particular reedy sound. I was totally wrong. The texture and shadings of these arrangements are more reminiscent of Duke Ellington and Benny Carter. Many of the songs paint superb jazz pictures without drifting too far from the big band sound. Others, more traditional to the pop big band sound of the era, blend nicely with the more creative pieces. I highly recommend this compact disc.
