Customer Reviews:
Wow.......2001-01-12
OK. Wow was the title from Lennie's 1949 Capitol sessions, but it still describes this music.
The last three tracks are live performances from the Sing Song Room of the Confucius Restaurant, summer 1955, which is the same date as the live recordings on the Rhino/Atlantic reissue of "Lennie Tristano/The New Tristano" mentioned by another reviewer. In the Mid 80's, when Atlantic first released that reissue on vinyl, they released a double album with the extra performances from the Sing Song Room, including the ones included here.
Excellent example of Tristano at his best.......2001-01-04
Although the Rhino reissue entitled Lennie Tristano/The New Tristano contains almost everything from the LPs Lennie Tristano and The New Tristano, the all-important masterpiece "C Minor Complex" was omitted due to a lack of space. This Giants of Jazz reissue, fortunately, provides Tristano fans with a complete version of the material from the LP The New Tristano, including "C Minor Complex." All but the final three tracks are solo recordings of Lennie at his very best, sounding very creative on several originals and one standard ("You Don't Know What Love Is"). The final three tracks were apparently included as a bonus and are taken from a different session with a small combo including Lee Konitz on alto sax. (Granted, the subtitle of this reissue, "Featuring Lee Konitz," is a bit misleading.) The quality of those last three tracks is comparable to the solo tracks, however. The sound quality on this reissue is not great (the signal level is a little weak, and there's more background hiss than I'm used to hearing), but the music is still heard very clearly. This CD will probably appeal more to serious jazz fans than to casual or new jazz listeners, but especially lovers of jazz piano will find much to enjoy. I have awarded this CD five stars because it is the only reissue currently in print of which I'm aware that contains this complete session (The New Tristano), perhaps Tristano's best ever.
