2 out of 5 stars Hellborg/Lane go acoustic.......2002-03-04

"Zenhouse" is an acoustic disc of improv from Hellborg/Lane. It also is the least enjoyable. Unlike the previous three releases Hellborg/Lane stay within the same context for three of the four pieces. The first three are all slow movements that lack the beauty of classical Adagio/Andante. Those types of pieces can be slow and extremely moving but Hellborg/Lane fail to generate any visceral connection with their audience. These movements are slow and boring as if they were waiting for some form of enlightenment and wouldn't be willing to move until the divine call. More than a half hour later the call is made. "Conclusion" is a Gypsyesque romp that has both Hellborg and Lane playing with their usual fire. Shawn in particular unleashes some of the best acoustic guitar virtuosity and might even top Dimeola/Mclaughin/Delucia. The problem is that by this time most people familiar with their other releases are ready for a nap. If one fourth of a disc is amazing and the rest is mediocre it should make you wonder what happened. Maybe instead of waiting Hellborg/Lane could have sketched out some form of a framework and the inspiration might have come earlier. Shawn and Jonas are both incredible musicians but this release was a dissapointment. I advise that you listen to the electric material until they release an acoustic disc that is worthy of their talents.

4 out of 5 stars Zen House - Intense, ambient, exotic.......2002-02-04

Such a high level of musicianship from these two yet again. I am continually impressed with Shawn Lane. I have been blown away by Shawn on Time is The Enemy and my personal favorite Two Doors, and with this intimate acoustic set was sonically entranced. The 4 pieces slowly build and then wane as these 2 weave intricate patterns of exotic/eastern melodies.

The highlight for me is the final piece where the two inject some seriously tasty runs with some pace - this is a nice change from the slower, intense emotional build of the previous pieces. At about 6 minutes into the last piece Shawn plays some truly devastating lines that will make your ears do a double take.

It is an interesting change from the usual electric set and apt. Q-258 provides the solid background which further empowers the intensity of the total sonic palette.

Shawn has got to be one of the best kept secrets of guitar mastery!

4 stars only because I believe that 5 stars is for a piece that has held the test of time and remained in the collective muscial consciousness. This is certainly a must have for fans though.

Be inspired!

5 out of 5 stars Zenhouse.......2000-06-15

Jonas Hellborg and Shawn Lane have done it again. This CD is from outer space. It is unhurried, elegant, and with a LOT of feeling. This music is like an expression of pure bliss...it is powerful yet in control. Fans of Hellborg and Lane will not be disappointed.
