Downtown improv.......2005-11-01
"Pure" is abstract and ephemeral, sometimes gauzy and sometimes strident. Vu's trumpet fades in and out, allowing plenty of space for each member of the trio to shine.
The rhythm section anchors floating, spinning compositions and channels them into dark funk territory. Stomu Takeishi's post-rockish bass is one of the real treats on this disc, swooping down on elusive grooves and pinning them to the wall.
dark growling moody noir.......2001-05-01
okay, so everyone throws around "noir" these days, but in this case i think it really fits. and someone compared a track to "sister ray," and i can see what they're thinking. the drumming is often very rock-oriented, the bass-player feeds back, and vu's trumpet is like a stream-of-consciousness georges bataille voice. no one else is doing this.
a real find.......2001-03-18
I am really impressed with this CD. First, because it has excellent pieces, and first rate playing and production, and evocative atmospheres that visit some places you won't find on the jazz brunch radio shows. But even more than that, it has a "throw caution to the wind" artistic attitude that makes for meaningful & intense music - this is not a CD done by people who much care about fitting into a nice, marketable category. The rhythm section is not afraid to be loud and crashing and noisy when required, and Cuong Vu's trumpet is always trying to expand its limitations, sometimes with big moody solos and sometimes with squawking, pained textures, all in the service of great & moving music. Other things I like: the subtle use of production, as in the back and forth from speaker to speaker effect in "Vina, All Grown Up" that are so integrated in the pieces that they don't even feel like effects; the sparing use of cymbals by the drummer which makes it more effective when he does hit them; the sometimes distorted and unjazz-like humming bass. All the tracks are excellent, but I must single out "I Shall Never Come Back" - it is one of the best pieces of music I've ever heard, full of sustained power, atmosphere and intensity that lasts over 17 minutes. When it ends you really feel like you've been through something, similar to the Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray" - it is that sort of experience.
