Great r&b jump blues honkers and barwalkers!.......2004-06-16

These guys all really know how to honk and wail a sax, especially Big Jay McNeeley and Joe "All Night Long Houston"(who is still very active in the blues scene today). This cd is 100% pure fun, and always energetic and lively, for a party. A perfect cd to dance jitterbug or lindy hop. There sin't a dud here, the cd stays true to it's title honk, honk, honk, these saxmen really do hank thier saxaphones! Wild and incredibly swingin' jump blues and 50's r&b!

Raucous Saxophone.......2002-06-11

Do not expect Charlie Parker here. Instead, expect loose sounding instrumentals without much in the way of a signature melody or line. The roughest kind of playing (in some cases just above the level of a fog horn). Often the cuts have a grating quality - even when the conventions of the music are accepted. I remember hearing this kind of sound emanating from the open doors of BLUE MOON CAFE along Broadway (#200 ?) in Newport, R.I. when the "fleet was in" during the early l950's.

(Hmm...well. not quite that good - but that's the idea.) Music of the period and type has suffered from modern digital remastering because "you can hear it too well". I rated it a 4 since I want the music to be better than it is. Some of the tracks have distortion in them. If you want to broaden your range of experience with this music, this CD is instructive without actually being enjoyable.
