For Jazz Purist only (no Sanborness or Electric Marientials).......2000-08-04
Like John Coltrane,George Garzone is also a searching soul.He is always finding some new grounds to present his art form. Not only he has absorbed many qualities of Coltrane's playing, technical virtuosity but also his musical conviction.I am always been in love with records made by Micheal Brecker,Joe Lovano,(The real)Kenny G,Bob Berg,Joe Henderson and Sonny Rollins. Then I hear George Garzone....seriously speaking,Garzone stands out among the many great Sax veterans (other than Branford Marsalis, which i think whom is the equal of Garzone.Ps,I don't compare John coltrane because he is the God of all sax player.).
This album is a true gift to all Jazz fanatics, jazz purist have every reason to get this one.The core rythmn section features John Lockwood on bass,Bob Gullotti on drums.Garzone,Lockwood and Gullotti are the 3 Neanderthal men, searching for life on Mars and Venus. You will hear on this record their ability to morph into whatever situation that is present to them. Now,that's their brotherhood. Then there's Kenny Werner(watch out for his piano playing,he got many aspects of Mcoy Tyner's fierce changes),whom I think is a better pianist than Joey Calderazzo.(Joey Calderazzo was the pianist on the record Two's and four's,it was such a shame that he was actually not up to the level of the others ,especially playing with people as great as Garzone.Anyway, check it out,Two's and Four's is just another great recording.)Kenny Werner is a liquid player whom can flow with Garzone's craziness.Garzone needs him in his brotherhood. Let's talk about the music in this record.
Moodiology(Prologue)-taking the approach of coltrane's 'welcome'(Transition record),calm, commanding and peacefully introducing the record.
Hey,Open Up-A great post-bop modern swing, one of my favourite.Garzone's own composition with the never before melody line and improvisation...Dark,sophisticated,Techincal complexity and alien-like skills that will make you jump out of your seat.Enjoy the rid...
Farewell To Athens-hmm..a cool Garzone styled ballad.
Summertime-Yess,other than John Coltrane's Summertime, this is the best version that i have ever heard.Garzone started off with a haunting improvisation, sounding almost eerie(his soprano sax got a very cold and unique sound)and after one round of solo,he hits the melody and continued his cold Summer jorney...
Simple-haha,a humorous piece that will put a smile on your face.
Naima-A great Coltrane standard.A display of depth and lyrical plaintive.
The Other Mingus-Like<Hey open up>,my favourite in this recording.
I'ii Remember April-take note, the <I'ii remember Mingus>is the wrong title,it should be'April'instead of'Mingus'.This is a great Garzone swinging composition, with his alien skills and his ability to swing so sickeningly well, that i can't stop playing this track on my cd player.
Soul Eyes-this track display Garzone's lyrical plaintive.A wonderful ballad that is worth every listen.
Plaka-yeah,they sounds like a bunch of big kids playing merrily.
Moodiology(Epilogue)-and finally,Garzone ends this album by playing seriously with many anguished overtones. An obvious tip of the cap to Coltrane's 'meditation suite' track(Transition recording).Kenny Werner is there to flow with Garzone's craziness by providing the lyrical Mycoy Tyner's chords changes. He seems to open up everything inbetween his chord playing so that there are so much space and wave for Garzone to rid on.Bob Gullotti did a great job by providing the Elvin Jones-like explosive rythmns. And John Lockwood is always there to support the Quartet.
Garzone is a true Coltranologist whom is a very much obsessive person. It's my honor to own his recordings, which can be compared to Coltrane's <Love Supreme> and many other great recordings.I bet Jazz Purist will feel the same as me.I believe Garzone is the kind of person whom completely rule out commercialization, notice that there are very few dissing of Garzone even in the Jazz media. He want his album to speak volume not the media. I am looking foward for his new record <Fringe In New York>.It's a tribute to the great John Coltrane,I am very excited for this one because I know this time he is even more for real.Be prepare for more...take care!
