Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An all-time great artist and album.......2003-03-29

Kenny Garrett's only problem is that you find his albums next to Kenny G's (sorry to mention his name in the same sentence w/Garrett, but it needed to be said). I saw Kenny in Miles' band a while back, but I didn't know who he was. I got turned on to "African Exchange Student" about 5 or 6 years ago. My only problem w/the title track was that it ended. It's almost hypnotic.

Even though Kenny's an alto player, I find his music and this band to be a spiritual continuum of John Coltrane's great 60's quartet. It has that "certain something" that I'm continully searching for in the music I purchase, but rarely find. This album is up there with "A Love Supreme", Hendrix's "Electric Ladyland", the Allman Brothers "Live at the Fillmore East", Miles' "Kind of Blue", and Col. Bruce Hampton and Aquarium Rescue Unit's live debut album as being among my absolute all-time favorites. Even track 4, the "smooth"one is a great tune. This is a gem of a recording. Salud, Kenny!!!

5 out of 5 stars one of Kenny's better albums.......2002-11-02

Along with Songbook and Triology, I think this is one of Kenny Garrett's best albums. I have all his albums, and this one, which is one of his first, is full of creativity and fiery energy, unlike some of his later recordings. This is very creative, interesting, and energized music, and there is a lot of variety among the tunes. Definatley consider buying this if you like jazz or if you like the saxophone!

5 out of 5 stars First and maybe best?.......2000-01-28

I've been listening to this one for about 8 years now, and I still hear new things. I just got his newest, a smooth jazz snoozer ("Simply Said"), and I had to go back and listen to this earlier work just to make sure it was the same guy.
I think he was still playing with Miles Davis when this one came out. I saw a few of their live show, with Kenny playing a very unusual straight alto sax. He played like a man possessed, with Miles standing right next to him, prodding him on to new heights. I was an instant fan. This CD has some of that magic on it, from burning bop to minor key mysteriosos, Kenny sounds brash and confident on these 'real' Jazz cuts.
Check out "Pursuance" too, where he takes on some of Coltrane's stuff.
