Solid Compilation of Random Cuts.......2005-08-10

This is a compilation off of Japan's Rambling label. It's a pretty hot label right now having put out some good compilations like Bossa a la Mode, Jazzistico, Stockholm Station, Scandinavian Style and many others.

It's a pretty good un-mixed set too. Starts out with a Claude Monnet track with Monica Nogueira on vocals which sets the tone. Although the tune gets a bit redundant as it carries on. Nicla Conte follows up nicely with a good remix to "Three Corners" - soon to be on The Five Corners Quintet's release. Nice song, good jazzed up feel and great keys. "Bliss" is another song that got my attention, given a funky chopped up beat sort of feel, thanks to Quantic remixing Rosie Brown's track. "Gica's Dance" is another song that I always liked with yet another broken beat layed under a jazzed up cut. And I also enjoyed "Suave" by Nu Tropic as it was given a quick paced beat that pretty much personified what this compilation was about - mixtures of jazz and house beats.

Keeping in mind that this is a pricey Japan import, I'd recommend it to collectors or those deep into hearing the genres of broken beats, nu-jazz and nu-soul & bossa. I certainly enjoyed it. But it wasn't without a misstep or two. "Hattari" and "Puppet Walk" just didn't really get it for me. If you do have this and enjoyed it, you would also probably like "For: KJM", a compilation of cuts dedicated to Kyoto Jazz Massive by fantastic artists. I'd also recommend the "Jazz in the House" series compiled by Phil Asher, and "Sister Bossa vol 6", a 2 disc compilation on Irma that's loaded with mixed up cuts with a heavy house and nu-jazz feel.
